DIY :: Repairing Clothes & #secondhandfirst

I’ve been convicted lately about how much stuff I have. I’ve also been thinking about trying to purchase second-hand more intentionally. If I need something, or if my kids are moving up a size, I immediately think “Off to Target!” I’ve purchased from ThredUp (an online consignment store) once before and I loved it, so I’m going to start looking there more often.

Another area of concern for me is repairing instead of tossing. Back in the “old days”, it was a common practice to mend holes and patch worn jeans. Now, my son rips holes into his jeans and I have no idea what to do (other than tell him he looks cool with holes in his jeans, lol).

I came across 2 posts in one day about unique ways to repair holes, and I just had to share. The first one comes from marissamadeit.com- She came across “visible mending” and shared her efforts on her blog (her original post). I love the way it looks, and it’s easy too!

This second idea comes from Hunter at pantsvillepress.com. She had a sweater with a couple of holes, so she used bright colored thread and embroidered the hole and the surrounding area with pretty flowers (her original post). This is a great way to practice some embroidery skills!

These methods will both come in quite handy in my house! Chet is constantly ripping his pants at the knees, and I’m always getting snags in my sweaters. Of course there will always be things that I can’t repair, but that’s what #secondhandfirst is for!

Do you have repairing techniques? Have you scored some awesome second-hand finds?

    I’m pretty easy on my clothes now – not like when I worked outside the home and always had a snagged sweater or holes from catching fabric on desks and what have you. I’ve been shopping Clothes Mentor and have scored some amazing stuff! Think cashmere, J.Jill and Ann Taylor!
